A couple of months ago an extreme dark stage was initiated from the United States as the leader of the free world announced that he was considering exiting from the World Health Organization in the middle of a pandemic. A couple of weeks drama that followed, the United States announced that they formally announce their acquittal from the organization and today the deed is official. Donald Trump has notified the Congress and the United Nations that the United States has formally withdrawn from the WHO.
The withdrawal comes into effect from next July, has drawn several criticism from both sides of the Senate, medical associations, advocacy organizations and many allies all around the world. Joe Biden who will face Donald Trump in November has vowed that he will reverse the following decision in a heartbeat if elected.
The news was first broken out by Sen. Robert Menendez who is a top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. “Congress received notification that POTUS officially withdrew the U.S. from the @WHOin the midst of a pandemic. To call Trump’s response to COVID chaotic & incoherent doesn’t do it justice. This won’t protect American lives or interests—it leaves Americans sick & America alone,” he wrote.
A State Department official also confirmed the latter that the United States notice of withdrawal will be effective from July 6th, 2021 was submitted to the UN Secretary-General who serves as the depository for the WHO. Spokesperson for António Guterres did confirm the same. António Guterres has condemned the actions that the United States has chosen to implement in the current global crisis.
The United States has received extreme fleak from government organizations and population world-wide to abandon the biggest and most coordinated organization effort to counter the ongoing pandemic. And the formal announcement from the United States puts the nail in the coffin against the bilateral relation that the latter always brags about.
